September 2021, 18.00 Uhr (in englischer Sprache) One hundred days into the tenure of the Presidential office, US President Joe Biden has tabled a set of ambitious and progressive policies. In concretu, the Biden Administration has put forward a $ 1.9 trillion economic stimulus program to fight the post-pandemic crisis and is promising higher minimum wages and family support. It has assigend more than $ 4 trillion to modernise the country´s ailing infrastructure, has set out to promote re-industrialization, and has made a call to push climate change research and climate action. Biden´s determination for change has led some commentators to draw comparisons with the New Deal under the legendary presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt.Having these programs approved in a divided Senate will certainly not be an easy ride for President Biden. However, the paradigm shift in the political and economic debate is already undeniably evident; To he extent that one might argue that the political argumentation put forward by some economists in America appears more “left” than the current economic debate in Europe. In his “State of the Union” speech, Joe Biden articulated his vision of a society that should be stabilized “from below and from the center”. It appears the Biden Adminstration is ready to take on the ideological battle that is now required turn this vision into a reality. In this talk, Jeffrey Sachs, one of the world´s leading economists, will analyze “Bidenomics”, the extent to which America will see a course of action under President Biden and provide his assessment whether the new president has a chance to realize his radical program. Jeffrey Sachs is a world-renowned American economist, academic, public policy analyst. He serves as the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, where he holds the title of University Professor. Jeffrey Sachs is one of the world’s most prominent voices on economic development and the fight against global poverty and President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. Sachs has authored and edited numerous books, including three New York Times bestsellers: The End of Poverty (2005), Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet (2008), and The Price of Civilization (2011), and most recently, The Ages of Globalization: Geography, Technology, and Institutions (2020). He was twice named among Time magazine’s 100 most influential world leaders and has received 35 honorary degrees.
